Madeleine Miller has a busy common law practice across all of Chambers’ practice areas, with a particular focus on family law and the court of protection.
Madeleine’s family practice primarily relates to children cases. She regularly appears in the Family Court in both public and private law proceedings. She has experience in applications to the High Court under the inherent jurisdiction, and has experience of deprivation of liberty in relation to both children and adults.
Before coming to the Bar, Madeleine worked as a senior employment tribunal caseworker at a trade union and as a paralegal on the Bindmans Grenfell Inquiry team. She also volunteered with the charitable initiative Vocalise, teaching debating skills in prisons.
Madeleine is particularly interested in issues of equality and diversity at the Bar.
Madeleine regularly represents Local Authorities, parents and guardians in care proceedings. She has experience of fact-finding hearings and contested final hearings in public and private law. She is instructed in cases dealing with allegations of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, substance and alcohol misuse, and neglect.
Madeleine’s criminal practice offers her an insight into each jurisdiction when dealing with concurrent criminal and family proceedings, and she is often instructed in applications for disclosure.
Madeleine regularly represents Local Authorities in applications in the Court of Protection. She has particular experience in dealing with applications under the welfare jurisdiction and regarding deprivation of liberty. She has appeared in disputes relating to residence, care and contact.
Madeleine is a CPS Grade 2 prosecutor and is regularly instructed in Crown Courts across London and in the South East. Madeleine has conducted trials involving vulnerable witnesses, expert evidence and dealt with victimless prosecutions.
Madeleine has experience acting for local authorities and the police in inquests, and for families in cases involving the deaths of children.
Madeleine has experience acting for the police in applications for civil orders such as Sexual Risk and Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, and in proceedings for the recovery of the proceeds of crime.
Madeleine is instructed on behalf of Claimants and Defendants in the County Court in fast-track and multi-track matters.
