Deka Chambers can provide legal services directly to the public. This means you do not need to use or instruct a solicitor in order to use our first class services.

Our role remains essentially the same. We can advise you on a wide range of matters.

Members of the direct access team can draft and send documents for you and can represent you in all courts and tribunals. We can also represent you at mediations and arbitrations.

By going directly to a barrister you are able to choose the right legal expert for your circumstances and you will almost certainly find us less expensive than using a solicitor. Our barristers are experts in their area of knowledge and are therefore ideally placed to guide and advise you through the complexities of legal matters.

We aim to provide a consistent service to our clients. We take all reasonable steps to ensure you receive a favourable outcome. This includes negotiating with the other party.

In summary, you are allowed to go directly to members for advice, representation and drafting.

Remember that:

  • All barristers are indemnified for any work they undertake
  • All barristers work within their scope of practice.
  • All barristers follow professional standards.

How it Works

You can email the barrister direct or make contact with our clerks to discuss the matter.

Once we have sufficient information with which to assess your case, we will contact you to (i) provide a fee quotation and (ii) agree a turnaround time for any written work / confirm our availability to attend court or a meeting.

Our fees will be clearly set out in our client care letter and are payable in full in advance by bank transfer or by way of cheque or debit/credit card telephone payment. After payment is received we will send you a receipt with our VAT number.

If it is clear from the initial reading of your papers that there is no merit in your case we will tell you without charging. However, in most cases it will take time for the barrister to read the papers and / or research the law, before advising on merit and we would charge for this.

Please note that we may be unable to take on your case. If so, we will inform you promptly.

Potential Savings

Direct Access to a barrister offers you two main potential savings:

  • Time – less delay
  • Money – less cost

Coming direct to a barrister means that you have complete control over your case. This increases your workload but means that you can control proceedings without being reliant on anyone else. Your barrister will guide you through the process and offer you advice on the various elements of the legal proceedings.

You can also make financial savings by avoiding solicitors’ fees in your case. You will be responsible for organising the case documents and writing letters and carrying out other tasks that a solicitor would ordinarily do. You will be reducing your costs whilst increasing your personal control. All of our barristers are transparent about the fees they charge allowing you to maintain a constant grasp on the financial aspects of your case.

The Process

We make Direct Access to a barrister as simple as possible. You can get in touch with us by phone or email and we aim to deal with your query quickly.

Firstly, identify the area of law that your claim fits into (for instance civil fraud or family). This will show you who in the team is qualified to deal with your case.

Secondly, have a look at the barristers’ profiles and select a barrister you would like to work with. If you would like us to help you select the right barrister for your case leave that to us and we will always allocate the most experienced and capable barrister within your price range.
