Deka Chambers hosted its online pupillage open event on 27 November 2023. We were delighted to welcome over 130 prospective applicants to hear about our application process and the work of barristers at our common law (mixed practice) set.
Claire Harden-Frost, one of our Heads of Pupillage, spoke about our upcoming recruitment round, how to apply and what we are looking for in applicants. Madeleine Miller described the training and support provided to pupils and her experiences of the first years in practice. James Byrne spoke about the transition of his practice across different areas of work and the cases involving serious injury which he now conducts at 17 years’ call. Clark Chessis, who recently marked his fiftieth year of clerking, gave the attendees his perspective as senior clerk. The panel members then answered various questions submitted in advance by the attendees.
Throughout the event, other members of chambers, and our current pupils, were also in attendance to answer questions asked live during the event.
Deka Chambers will be seeking to recruit up to two pupils in the upcoming application round, each with a supporting financial package worth £65,000. The application window will be open from 3 January 2024 to 7 February 2024. First round interviews will be held on 2 March 2024. Second round interviews will be held on 27 and 28 March 2024. Applications must be made to Deka Chambers directly on our own application form, which will be available in due course on our website. We welcome applications from all capable candidates, regardless of background; and we have recently updated the pupillage pages on our website, which can be accessed here, to provide more information about our process. Any remaining queries can be sent to pupillage@dekachambers.com.
