Nerys Wyn Rees has spent the last 14 and a half years at the employed Bar. By the nature of her employment, her work has been almost exclusively public law children work.
Nerys has gained extensive experience over her 26 years at the Bar. In particular, the detailed knowledge she has of working within local government and the first-hand understanding that she has of the current and ongoing challenges that face all social work legal teams, means she is well placed to take on work from any local authority, inside or outside London.
Collaborative working to achieve the best outcomes for children has been the cornerstone of her career.
Nerys provides legal advice and advocacy across all types of childcare cases and hearings.
She deals with all types of childcare hearings: from initial interim hearings and case management hearings to contested fact finding and final hearings; High Court wardship and DOLs hearings; and Court of Appeal hearings.
Nerys has advised and represented local authorities on all aspects of public law section 31 applications and occasionally on private law matters where a section 37 report has been directed.
She covers hearings on cases from the initial urgent or emergency hearings right the way through to final hearing (and on occassion, appeal hearings).
Nerys’ previous roles have included supporting the legal and social work teams in case planning and case progression. This involves meeting with all levels of decision makers within local authorities from the Strategic Director and Director of Children’s Social Care downwards, to ensure that the team remains compliant with Court directions and that cases are being actively managed within the Court timetable and the welfare needs of the children.
An appeal from orders made by HHJ Tolson on 3 November 2017 at the Central Family Court in relation to three children: D (a boy aged 12), A (a girl aged 9) and M (a girl aged 5) within section 31 proceedings. Appeal brought by the mother. Opposed by all other parties. Nerys appeared on behalf of the Local Authority throughout the section 31 proceedings and was led by Alison Ball KC in the Court of Appeal.
