Julia Brechtelsbauer

Julia undertakes work in Deka’s core practice areas and has a specialist practice in personal injury / clinical negligence, travel law, police law and claims against public authorities. Her academic background in comparative law means she has particular expertise in cases considering local standards, applicable law and jurisdiction. 

​Julia is especially adept at issues concerning scope/existence of a duty of care. She was led by Sarah Prager KC in a case concerning novel arguments about assumption of responsibility of a holiday booking platform, which they were defending.  Ultimately, the claim against the platform was discontinued with an order for costs.  

Julia has a special interest in domestic and international sexual assault / abuse cases, representing Claimants and Defendants. Her training and experience as a criminal barrister in sexual assault cases has honed her skills in robust cross-examination balanced with sensitive treatment.  

Despite her relative junior level of call Julia also has experience in appellate advocacy and has been successful in making and resisting appeals.  

In police law, her experience in both criminal and civil law provides for a depth of knowledge and practical understanding. Julia regularly appears in the Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court prosecuting and defending across the country. She has also successfully applied for various civil orders on behalf of the police.

Julia studied an LLM at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in Comparative Private Law. Her dissertation focused on the law of surrogacy across the UK, South Africa and US. At undergraduate level, she came first in her year in Comparative Private Law and EU Law at the University of Oxford, placing 5th in the year overall.
