Third Six Pupils: Applications Invited

News | Thu 2nd Dec, 2021

9 Gough Chambers is a leading common law set of chambers based in London, known for its core strengths in advocacy, drafting and advisory work. Clients include solicitors, local government, central government, corporate bodies and individuals. Tenants practise in all areas of work for the first three years after recruitment, which provides enviable advocacy experience and develops an interesting and varied practice.

We are inviting applications for two third six pupils who wish to practise in all of our core practice areas. Actual experience at the Bar in all of our areas is not essential for an application, but we are seeking candidates who can demonstrate broad analytical and advocacy abilities, sound judgement and a genuine desire to develop a mixed practice. We are seeking to expand the number of junior tenants owing to a growing amount of work and in line with a plan of measured expansion.

We envisage that the successful applicant will start with us in early January 2022, but that is flexible and subject to alternative agreement. No financial award is offered, but during the period of the third six pupillage no chambers rent will be levied. Third six pupils are responsible for obtaining and maintaining adequate insurance (at least £1m of cover) through Bar Mutual whilst practising at 9 Gough Chambers.

The ‘third six’ pupillages will run from the commencement date until tenancy decisions in September 2022 (or such other date as many be agreed).

To apply, please send a CV and a covering letter, specifying the names of two referees (or attaching references if they are already obtained), to Claire Harden-Frost and William Dean at charden@9goughchambers.co.uk and wdean@9goughchambers.co.uk respectively. Applications will be treated in strict confidence and, prior to interview, will be seen only by the two Heads of Pupillage and a third nominated member of the interviewing panel.

We operate an equal opportunity recruitment policy and encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, marital status, religion or disability.
Any offer will be conditional on a candidate having a valid practising certificate and sufficient insurance. Other conditions may also be applied.

Owing to the changing nature of applicants’ situations, there is no formal deadline for applications; and we may offer either third six pupillage to a preferred candidate at any time. Interviews will be arranged at the mutual convenience of applicants and interviewers, likely on weekday evenings; reasonable adjustments will be made where practicable.
