Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Psychotherapist Dismissed

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) brought allegations against AB, an eminent Psychotherapist, alleging he had abused and exploited his relationship with Client A for his own sexual gain, had failed to act in the best interests of Client A, had entered into a dual relationship, and had conducted himself in an inappropriate and unprofessional manner.

The Adjudication Panel heard evidence from a number of witnesses and Dr Khatan, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist over a number of days.  Following the closure of the evidence, the Panel accepted the submissions made on behalf of AB and dismissed all the allegations, without having to consider misconduct.

The Panel concluded that at the time of the events complained of, she had reported being in a state of shock.  This had probably distorted her perception of what had happened, and this may have given rise to confusion.  Client A was experiencing emotional and psychological distress at the material time.

The continued use of cannabis also concerned the Panel.  The use of cannabis may have affected her perception and recollection of events.  The consumption of alcohol was also a relevant factor.

The Panel found AB to be an open and honest witness.

In summary, the Panel concluded that Client A was confused and in state of shock at the time in that her perception of events may have been affected.

In all the circumstances, the Panel was not satisfied that the UKCP had proved the allegations.

False allegations of sexual assault can have a long lasting impact on the accused, affecting reputation and personal relationships.  Allegations of this nature can be extremely distressing for the accused and their families.
