Grahame Aldous QC secures £2.3 million damages for a single leg amputee

News | Mon 24th Aug, 2015

A young man who made a remarkable recovery after a life threatening boating accident has received damages of over £2.3 million.

The Claimant suffered an above knee amputation of his leg after he was struck by the propeller of a rescue boat coming to assist him in the water. The award, agreed shortly before the claim was due on for trial at the High Court, includes lifetime provision for an Otto Bock Genium powered prosthetic  limb, plus a spare in case of emergencies. The defendants had originally claimed that the award should be limited under the London Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims 1976, but the award represented a record recovery in full for a single leg amputation in the circumstances.

Grahame Aldous QC of 9 Gough Chambers acted for the Claimant.
